My name is James Stockdale and I run The British Kitchen, a Shanghai cake shop & bakery. I am also a fully qualified architect, but that’s a story for another day!
When I came to Shanghai in 2011 it soon became clear that finding some of my favorite foods and sweet treats from back home in the UK was impossible. As the UK has such a strong history of cakes, biscuits and baking, I decided something had to be done, and so the idea to open a Shanghai Cake shop, The British Kitchen, was born.
Our artisan British Bakery specializes in some of the harder to find traditional British foods including English Gingerbread, Lemon Drizzle Cake and Millionaires Shortbread. We use authentic recipes and most of our key ingredients are imported including butter from New Zealand and chocolate from one of the best suppliers in the world Callebaut.
Although our Shanghai Cake Shop is online based, you can also find our products for sale at different cafe’s around Shanghai including Spread the Bagel on Nanchang Road and Sumerian Cafe on Shaanxi Road North. You can also find us at different markets and events around Shanghai where we sell a constantly evolving range British Cakes including Jiashan Saturday Market.
We always strive to make the best foods we can and we are strongly against the use of artificial preservatives or additives and so we certainly hope you enjoy eating our products as much as we enjoy making them. If you have any questions or queries for us please do get in touch through our contacts page or better still drop by the market for a chat and a chunky caramel brownie.
In 2014 we were awarded The Best Cottage Industry in the That’s Shanghai Food & Drinks awards.
Look out for The British Kitchen appearing at food markets and events around Shanghai.
